Today is Fantastic Fungi Day! These impressive organisms work to recycle and decompose material in our ecosystems to make room for new growth. They connect to one another through extensive networks and some even provide amazing health and nutrition benefits to humans.

At a time when humanity is facing the challenge of maintaining connections across physical distance and contemplating the rebirth of our own society, the role of the humble mushroom beautifully parallels the current human experience.

Director Louie Schwartzberg has collaborated with scientists, mycologists, and medical professionals to create a documentary, Fantastic Fungi, about the marvelous nature of mushrooms. Although COVID-19 has created some roadblocks in terms of releasing the movie in theaters, the creators would still like to share this educational and entertaining experience with viewers around the world.

On the Fantastic Fungi Day website, you can rent or buy the film to stream in your own home and, as an added bonus, you can register for an interactive Q&A with a panel of individuals who helped create the film. The rental price is only $4.99 and the three Q&A sessions are scheduled for 1 pm, 6 pm, and 9 pm PST.

We at the Optimist Daily frequently share the benefits of mushrooms for our health and the health of our natural world. If you’re finding yourself missing the movies, or missing some connection, during this strange time, register to watch the beautifully-made movie and satisfy your ache for insightful connection with the Q&A. You can even make yourself some homemade popcorn to complete the experience! Follow the link below to rent the movie and register for the Q&A.
