Solar energy production in America is set to get a giant boost after the Interior Department of the US approved plans for the biggest solar farm the country has ever seen. Dubbed the Gemini Project, the $1 billion solar farm will be built 30 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

The Gemini Project will sit on 7,100 acres of desert land, making it the largest solar farm in the US and the eighth largest solar farm in the world. Gemini is scheduled for completion as soon as 2022 and will provide enough energy to power all 225,000 of the homes in Las Vegas, and then some.

It’s also expected that it will create 1,600 to 1,800 temporary construction positions, and provide 19 permanent jobs. For Nevada, the new solar farm was needed after the governor signed a bill that requires Nevada utilities to get half of their electricity from green energy sources by 2030 and set a goal of 100% net-zero by 2050.
