Today’s Solutions: March 22, 2026

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) acquired their first all-electric garbage truck in September 2020, and after successful testing in Brooklyn, the city has announced plans to purchase and deploy seven more all-electric models.

The trucks will be purchased from Mack Trucks, part of the Volvo Group, and will be deployed across all seven districts of the city. “New York City has set an ambitious goal of reducing GHG emissions by 100% by 2040,” says Rocco DiRico, the deputy commissioner for support services. “DSNY is purchasing these seven Mack LR Electric refuse vehicles in support of achieving our environmental objectives with a zero-emissions truck that is also extremely quiet.”

DSNY has a fleet of 6,000 vehicles, making it the largest sanitation department in the world, and all-electric garbage trucks not only have zero-emissions, but they’re also healthier for sanitation workers and far quieter. Although seven trucks are just a small proportion of the fleet, this is a good sign of forwarding environmental progress.
