The Solar Impulse 2—a very innovative solar-powered airplane—has completed a historic flight from Japan to Hawaii without using one drop of fuel. The aircraft has been in the air for 118 hours, and flew more than 5100 miles. The distance covered and the time spent in the air are records for manned, solar-powered flights. The Solar Impulse 2 has two pilots: Swiss aviators and explorers Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard, who are sharing flying duties in their quest to circumnavigate the globe. They started their journey in Abu Dhabi in March. Borschberg flew from Japan to Hawaii, Piccard will continue with the next leg from Hawaii to Phoenix, Arizona. The aircraft is scheduled to return to Abu Dhabi in August 2015. The Swiss team is using the various stopovers on its round-the-world journey to carry a campaigning message to local people on the topic of clean technologies.
