We may think of retirement as the first stage in a person’s declining health. However, a new study from Germany has found that retirement improves people’s health because they take more exercise, sleep longer and have more time to recover from work-related strain. Retirees enjoy their time after work by pursuing a more active lifestyle that leads to healthier habits and fewer trips to the doctor’s office. Retirees can also afford to hit the snooze button a few times to catch more sleep, giving a boost in mental health as well. The study found these benefits increase in people whose jobs were physically demanding.
