Peatland its extremely beneficial for the environment, locking in carbon emissions that would otherwise end up in the atmosphere. Now scientists in the central Congo basin have discovered the world’s largest tropic peatland, a massive swamp larger than the size of England. The swamps could capture 30bn tons of carbon that was previously not known to exist. That’s enough to store the equivalent of three year’s worth of the world’s total fossil fuel emissions, making this region one of the most carbon-rich ecosystems in the world.
