Last week, the US Senate passed the most significant land-protection legislation in a decade touching every state in the country and protecting more than 1.3 million acres of wilderness from any damaging human intervention. Among other provisions, the legislation extends an important program that will help expand and restore habitat for a variety of vulnerable bird species, including Northern Spotted Owl, Coastal California Gnatcatcher, and Red-cockaded Woodpecker. The Bill package also includes a reauthorization of the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act, which supports partnerships for protecting the 340 bird species that breed in North America and winter in Latin America and the Caribbean. This provision is particularly important as it provides dedicated funding which directly benefits migratory birds by looking at their full life cycle. The legislation is expected to significantly improve conservation efforts and protect hundreds of bird species that, for the past couple of decades, have been suffering a dramatic decline across the continent.
