Costa Rica has long been on the forefront when it comes to addressing climate change, but their latest pledge is their boldest yet. By 2021, the central American nation wants to become the first country to be plastic and carbon-free.

Costa Rica already launched a national strategy to replace plastics with recyclable and water-soluble solutions and is well underway to becoming carbon-free. A carbon neutral nation must make sure the amount of carbon being produced is equal to what is being taken away.

To accomplish this, Costa Rica wants to ban fossil fuels, become 100 percent renewable, and expand its forest area. At the moment, the country already produces 99 percent of its energy using solar, wind, and hydropower!
