In an effort to promote sustainability and reduce waste, Nike has launched their new “Nike Refurbished” program to clean and resell gently worn shoes. Shoes that are returned within 60 days of purchase will be assessed and placed back on the shelf at a discounted rate. 

Shoes that are too damaged to be resold will become part of the “Nike Grind” program which breaks down the product into reusable components that are then used to make products like rubber flooring, outdoor courts, and other shoes. 

Nike Refurbished is launching in 15 stores to start, but the company plans to quickly expand the program. 

Experts estimate the secondhand goods market will be worth $64 billion by 2024. Not only are these programs good for the planet, but they also benefit consumers who get like-new products at a more affordable price. Other retailers, like outdoor company REI, offer similar programs and we are likely to see more of these as consumers become more aware of the environmental impact of their purchases.
