Engineers have developed a “solar fuels rig” that floats on the ocean, captures energy through a solar cell and uses it to harvest hydrogen from the water beneath. Current methods of producing the clean fuel source aren’t so clean, but with this floating rig, no CO2 is created. To produce hydrogen, the rig uses a technique called water electrolysis where H2 and O2 gases are separated out of water by passing an electric current through the water. With a tremendous amount of solar energy available to power the rig, this could finally make hydrogen a feasible fuel source.
