After years in the doldrums, the fortunes of Midwest cities like Columbus, Indianapolis, and Kansas City are on the rise. That’s because startups are starting to cluster in these old industrial strongholds. But unlike their coastal cousins, the startups of the Midwest are focusing on jobs that require less than a college degree, allowing more people to be employed quicker. These kinds of jobs, which are called Mid-tech jobs, composed more than a quarter of all tech employment in major midwestern metropolitan areas since 2012.
