In a bid to tackle plastic waste, McDonald’s has announced only hand out straws to customers upon request, rather than giving them standard with every drink. And in some diners, customers will be receiving paper straws instead of plastic. It might seem like a minuscule change, but the act of having to ask for a straw will force people to think, even for just a few seconds, about whether or not they really need such a product, and that’s likely to make a dent in consumption. In other news, the fast food chain is also in the process of developing fully-recyclable packaging.
