Shipping vessels are killing whales on the Atlantic coast at an unprecedented rate. To try and put an end to this, researchers placed a buoy containing a sophisticated hydrophone that eavesdrops on whales and records the sounds they make. The buoy also transmits data in almost real time, which not only gives the researchers tons of new insight into the tonal calls of whales, but is also helping them keep humans and whales out of one another’s way.
