Unless you live under a rock, you’re probably aware that single-use plastic items such as disposable cutlery and straws are falling out of favor. In fact, cities around the world such as Seattle and Paris have already issued bans on straws. But what will come in its place? The answer may possibly come out of Mexico where a company is manufacturing biodegradable cutlery and straws made out of avocado seeds. Avocado seeds pile up in Mexico like nowhere in the world, and most end up being burned at landfill sites. But now, after years of testing different methods of extracting biopolymer out of the seed, avocado-based bioplastics that are eco-friendly are being produced. With the production of avocados standing at all-time high right now and the need for alternatives to harmful single-use plastics becoming greater and greater, bioplastics made from avocado seeds may just be the solution. Guacamole anyone?
