In 2016, the highest ranking military official in the Dutch armed forces, Tom Middendorp, was laughed at when he declared climate change a threat to the world’s security. Now less than three years later, military leaders from all around the world are following in his footsteps. In fact, support for what was once a fringe notion has become so strong that Middendorp launched a global network of senior military leaders to drive policy on the security implication of climate change. For green-minded policymakers, the hope is that drawing the armed forces into the debate on countering the potentially devastating effects of climate change will strengthen arguments for decreasing carbon emissions. It might also lead militaries themselves to scale back their use of fossil fuels.
