While a nice, minty toothpaste can leave your mouth feeling fresh, it has the opposite effect on the environment. Some of the chemicals in toothpaste cause serious water pollution, and with most people spitting those chemicals down the drain twice a day, all that pollution adds up. With that in mind, a blog by the name of Paws and Pines has come up with a simple approach to help you switch to eco-toothpaste. These toothpaste can taste a bit different, so switching is something they recommend you do at your own pace.

The first thing they recommend is that you look for mainstream and conscious brands that you can find at most stores, like Toms of Maine and Hello Oral. These are mostly vegan, cruelty-free produces but are widely available. For more options, head to natural food stores such as Whole Food and Trader Joe’s, which have a larger section of “natural toothpaste” such as Dr. Bronner’s and Kiss My Face.

The next thing you should do is take some time to get used to the different tastes and textures of natural toothpaste. Without chemicals and additives, they won’t be exactly what you’re used to.

If you hate something, try a different brand before giving up. Lastly, if you’re really serious about being environmentally friendly, explore zero-waste options like products that come in glass jars. Even plastic containers are better than aluminum tubes because they can be more readily recycled. For the full guide on eco-friendly toothpaste and the chemicals to avoid, have yourself a look here.
