Today’s Solutions: April 30, 2024

It’s the end of January, so how are those New Year’s resolutions going? Are you achieving your goals? If not, don’t beat yourself up about it, we have a list of strategies on how to make positive habits stick to get you back on track with your resolutions for 2020.

Wendy Wood, a psychology professor at the University of Southern California, says that even though we know how to instill new habits, it can be difficult to do so. The important part is recognizing when we’re getting off track and implement necessary adjustments.

  1. Pair together the good, the bad, and the consistent: Creating new habits can be tough, but matching them with the daily things you know and love makes it easier. So watch your favorite show on the stair stepper, reward yourself for remembering your reusable cup with a yummy latte, or use the time you already spend commuting on the train to catch up on those reading goals.
  2. Make your own New Year: Who said January was the time to start a new habit? If you’ve fallen off the wagon, don’t wait until 2021, decide to start anew this Sunday or implement a new goal starting February 1!
  3. Welcome discomfort: Getting out of your comfort zone is just that, uncomfortable. Focus on the benefits of your new positive habits and the discomfort zone will feel like home in no time.
  4. Lighten up: Missing a workout or having coffee after noon is not the end of the world. A positive attitude about the potential of tomorrow will make it easier to get back on track. It’s okay to slip up. Reset and recommit to your positivity goals first thing tomorrow.

This week we are celebrating the power of positivity. Setting new, positive goals for the new year is a great way to better yourself and achieve your goals. If you’ve let your ambitions slide a bit since January 1, use these four strategies to get back on track today!
