Electric vehicles had their biggest year yet in 2019, with their total market share amounting to 2.5 percent at the end of the year. While it may seem like a small percentage, it represents significant growth for the electric vehicle industry.

To speed up this transition towards cleaner vehicles, automakers still have to overcome some technological hurdles, including the distance drivers can go before having to recharge the battery and the life of the battery itself. The range currently runs from 100 miles on the low end up to over 200 miles in newer models, and most warranties run out after 150,000 miles or 8 years.

The latter figures are about to get a big boost thanks to Chinese car battery-maker Contemporary Amperex Technology, who announced last week that it is ready to manufacture a new battery capable of powering a vehicle for 1.2 million miles across the course of a 16-year lifespan.

To put that into perspective, Earth’s circumference at the equator is about 24,901 miles, meaning that a 1.2 million-mile battery could power a car for 50 trips around the world before it gave out. This is a great solution for further expanding the applications and efficiency of electric vehicles.
