Today’s Solutions: April 28, 2024

For astronauts and E.T. fans alike, the big question has always been, is there alien life out there? Now, science may be able to offer an answer to that question. Although nobody has received communication from any alien civilizations, researchers estimate that there are 36 viable sites for life in our galaxy.

Looking at technical features necessary for life, researchers analyzed areas where a metal content equal to that of the Sun is present. “The idea is looking at evolution, but on a cosmic scale,” said Christopher Conselice, Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Nottingham.

Based on their calculations, there could be dozens of intelligent alien civilizations hiding in our galaxy. Unfortunately, the team also estimates that the nearest site for potential life would be 17,000 light-years away, making it impossible to communicate. It is also possible that these sites hosted alien life that is long since gone.

However, finding sites of potential life in our galaxy could offer insights into our own history and future as a planet. If nothing else, the discovery will give you a bit more to contemplate on your next stargazing adventure.
