That’s when Paolo Lugari decided to change things. Together with a small group of friends and advisors he began rebuilding the environment of Gaviotas. How they did it is a longer story. But the simple summary is this: Today Gaviotas is an example of regeneration and of real sustainability. Over four decades 1.5 million trees have been planted and below those the Amazonian tropical rainforest that once was there is slowly growing back. Gaviotas is energy and water sufficient.
Gaviotas is a well protected place these days. It is hard to even get a permit to visit the area, let alone the challenge of getting there.
