Today’s Solutions: March 28, 2024

If you want to make a very special trip and witness that sustainability truly exists, you want to go to Gaviotas… (and, by the way, you may discover more priceless opportunities in the current auction of The Intelligent Optimist…)

Pessimism about the environment is abundant. There are daily reports about the end of natural resources, the loss of precious rainforests or the extinction of species. Good news about the planet is rare. That’s why I want to tell you a remarkable story of regeneration.

Forty-two years ago, Gaviotas in Colombia, was a sad tale of once beautiful land gone waste. Gaviotas in 1970 seemed to have no future. The land was barren, eroded and exhausted. That’s when Paolo Lugari decided to change things. Together with a small group of friends and advisors he began rebuilding the environment of Gaviotas. How they did it is a longer story. But the simple summary is this: Today Gaviotas is an example of regeneration and of real sustainability. Over four decades 1.5 million trees have been planted and below those the Amazonian tropical rainforest that once was there is slowly growing back. Gaviotas is energy and water sufficient.

Gaviotas is a well protected place these days. It is hard to even get a permit to visit the area, let alone the challenge of getting there.

But here’s the good news: Gunter Pauli, one of Lugari’s trusted advisors from the very beginning, who has visited and worked in Gaviotas many times has offered to take two people to this very special place. This is a unique one-day trip for anyone interested in a very special story about sustainability. You will find inspiration and practical examples for your sustainability consultancy for instance. Or this is a rare opportunity for a writer looking for a very special story about how to create a better world. With Gunter Pauli as your personal guide, this a your chance!
