Huge improvements have been made to London’s cycling network over the last few years, with more cycle lanes and driver awareness campaigns. And while cycling becomes safer and easier, the number of London residents cycling to work has more than doubled in the last 10 years. Now that the number of people on bike lanes is increasing, the city decided to test out a special new kind of traffic light to keep them moving. These special traffic lights stay green until all the cyclists have crossed the road. The bike traffic signals use radar and thermal imaging to automatically sense how many cyclists happen to be waiting at a particular intersection, and then adjust the length of the light so everyone can cross. If the trials go well, London will start installing the new lights throughout the city, as part of a $6 billion plan to modernize centuries-old streets.
