The plight of indigenous people robbed of their land by greedy corporations with the complicity of corrupt governments is a familiar story around the world. A less ordinary story is that of communities being given the legal opportunity to claim titles to the land that has been sustaining them for centuries. This is precisely what the 2012 amendment to India’s Forest Rights Act is making possible. Tribal women have been taking action to make sure they claim every square inch of the forestland that their villages are entitled to and depend on for its survival. Remarkably positive results include ecosystem conservation and a reliable income from sustainable forest management. Last but not least, other communities are taking notice.
