Global warming is making drinking water scarcer. Desalination can provide a solution in many coastal areas where most of the world population lives. But desalination requires a lot of energy; making fresh drinking water expensive. “The Pipe” is designed to solve that problem. Here it is pictured as a floating installation off the coast of Santa Monica, California. The device is powered by the sun and can provide 1.5 billion gallons of cheap and clean drinking water per year—enough for almost 2 million people. And The Pipe looks great on the horizon.
