Fashion is the second dirtiest industry in the world, causing widespread pollution and subsequent health problems in Asia, where most clothing production takes place. Innovator Rebecca Burges witnessed the harmful effects of the fashion industry firsthand when she was working in villages in Asia, and was inspired to build a sustainable clothing system—complete with natural dye farms, renewable energy, and compostable—in the U.S. The result is Fibershed, a movement to build a network of farmers, ranchers, designers, ecologists, sewers, dyers, and spinners in 54 communities around the world, mostly in North America.
