The idea of basic income is being hailed for its potential to reduce poverty and cut out red tape. Finland recently launched its own trial in January, and now the largest province in Canada is experimenting with giving a basic income to randomly selected people with no strings attached. Single adults will be given a yearly income of C$16,989, while a couple will earn C$24,027, minus 50 percent of any income earned from a job. The three-year study will test whether this basic income program is better than current social welfare programs.
