Do wind turbines kill birds and bats? Yes. Is it as bad as people make it out to be? Not at all. Those who oppose wind farms often claim wind turbine blades kill large numbers of birds, but according to three new studies, this is certainly not the case. One study found that there are between 0.3 and 0.4 fatalities for every gigawatt-hour (GWh) of electricity produced by wind farms and nuclear power-stations while fossil-fuelled power stations were responsible for about 5.2 fatalities per GWh. Another study found that for every one bird killed by a wind turbine, fossil fuel-powered plants killed 2,118 birds. When compared to the non-renewable sources, wind power actually spares birds.
