India is known as a Hindu country. However, the country has a large Muslim minority of 180 million people almost as many as in full-Muslim neighboring Pakistan. In 1961, Pakistan banned an ancient Muslim practice allowing Muslim men to dissolve marriages by pronouncing the word “divorce” three times. It took India more than 50 years to do the same. This week the Indian Supreme Court declared “triple talaq” unconstitutional. The court ruled that the practice is “not integral to religious practice and violates constitutional morality”. The decision is hailed as a huge victory for India’s Muslim women.
