In India, more than half of groundwater is not ideal for drinking. It would be if it weren’t so salty. However, desalination is expensive, especially in villages on a small scale, and requires electricity, of which there isn’t enough. At MIT, researchers have worked on a solution—solar-powered desalination. A newly developed device offers village-scale desalination powered by the sun.
