While the oil and gas industry is experiencing the biggest round of job losses in almost 20 years, renewables account for a record job hiring. Employment in solar, wind and hydro energy jumped 18 percent last year to 7.7 million jobs globally, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency. Most of these jobs are being created in Asia where governments in countries such as China and India are embarking on massive programs to use more renewable energy. Meanwhile in the oil and gas industry, more than 200,000 jobs have been cut worldwide since oil prices collapsed last year, according to recruiter Swift Worldwide Resources.
