As the New Delhi Auto Show nears closer, India is keen to get hybrid and electric cars into the mainstream. Cities across the country are being engulfed by smog and the odd-even license plate plan has gotten off to a bad start, so the government is teaming up with automakers such as Toyota as well as domestic players like Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra to display their green technology to potential buyers. To help incentivize buyers, the government is offering $2,000 in aid per car, and will likely extend this offer until 2020. Carmakers can also receive concessions up to $2,032 per car sold. IHS Automotive believes the offer will help catapult green vehicles to nearly a third of a 5 million car market by 2020, and will hopefully ease the country’s worsening smog issues. Stricter emissions regulations are expected to be implemented soon as well, and the Supreme Court is also weighing in on banning diesel cars from New Delhi in the future.
