Buying high-quality organic food at Whole Foods isn’t exactly an option for shoppers on a tight budget, which is why the chain is opening its first budget grocery store. Under the name 365 by Whole Foods, this smaller grocery store will not only offer organically grown food at a low price, but it will also push the envelope in terms of how sustainable a grocery store can be. Any leftover food will go to food banks, and scraps will be composted. The store will also use a system that recaptures 25 percent of the waste heat from units to be reused and all the lights will be LEDs. On top of that the refrigeration cases run on CO2, which have a much lower carbon footprint than typical refrigerators. The first 365 store will open in the Los Angeles area in the coming months, with a full rollout of more stores to happen in 2017.
