Spiders’ silk is a remarkably strong substance. The durability of a spider’s web is comparable to that of both Kevlar and steel, which is truly astounding when one considers that the material is produced by a creature no larger than a coin. Scientists across the globe have taken great interest in the silk’s incredible power, and they have been racing to develop a synthetic version of the material, to create objects ranging from auto-parts to medical devices. Two companies think they have figured it out.
