Sweden has committed to reaching net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2045. Today, only 5 percent of the electricity Swedes consume comes from burning fossil fuels. Each ton of cement used in the building industry produces more than half a ton of carbon dioxide. As a result, the cement industry contributes 5-6 percent of all global emissions. Now Sweden has found a way to wield naturally occurring algae to capture carbon dioxide coming from a cement plant before it enters the atmosphere.
