Here’s a good example: Since we are not yet all vegetarians, a lot of chickens are killed for food—some 50 billion each year. In fact, chicken is set to overtake beef, pork, and fish as the world’s most popular form of protein by 2020. But we don’t eat the feathers and these end up in landfills or incinerators. Feathers make up 5 percent of a chicken’s bodyweight. Two entrepreneurs from London have discovered a better way: The feathers can be turned into building insulation.
