Most news from Antarctica is about rapid ice loss and record-setting icebergs breaking loose, feeding into a vicious cycle that speeds up global warming. On average, Antarctica is losing more than 175 billion tons of ice each year since 2012, including a chunk the size of Delaware last year.
But here’s some good news. It turns out that the bedrock below Antarctica is rising much faster than expected and this trend is expected to continue and even speed up in the future. This trend can dramatically increase the stability of the ice sheet and that would slow further loss and push up bedrock to counteract rising sea levels. This new research offers a note of hope in the often discouraging conversation around climate change.
