Predicting earthquakes could be pivotal in saving lives in the future, but rolling out a sensor network to detect seismic activity across earthquake-prone areas is a very expensive process. To make predicting earthquakes more affordable, researchers have developed technology that detects earthquakes through the jiggling of fiber optic lines. The technology uses laser interrogators to watch for disturbances in the fiber and sends out information about the magnitude and direction of tremors. The system can not only detect different types of seismic waves but can also spot minor or localized quakes that might otherwise go unnoticed.
