Using simple materials, scientists have built robot “muscles” that can lift 1,000 times their own weight. These muscles are made out of metal or plastic “skeletons” that are covered in either a liquid or air, and then sealed in plastic or fabric “skins,” which are then folded in origami-like structures that make them stronger. By using lightweight materials to make powerful robots, humans can work safely around them without the fear of being crushed if they fell. These new structures are also surprisingly cheap, costing less than $1 for a single muscle.
