Deep in the heart of the Congo rainforest, Congolese and British scientists have made an extraordinary discovery. What they have come across is a huge basin of peat, a mud-like material that builds up over centuries and stores carbon that would normally be released into the atmosphere during decomposition. The tropical peatland is the largest of its kind, stretching over an area bigger than England. It also stores the equivalent of 20 years worth of US carbon emissions. Following this discovery, it’s imperative that the Congo forest remains protected from encroaching loggers.
