While hydrogen fuel cells have made news lately for their promise to produce clean, efficient energy, there’s a new a fuel cell that’s promising to make headlines. Researchers have created something called the direct carbon fuel cell that generates clean energy using solid carbon sources like coal and biomass. What makes this special is that by adding carbon capture technology to the design, you could reuse the carbon dioxide released by the fuel cell to power it more. Of course, a shift to carbon-free renewable energy is necessary to mitigate climate change, but this new device may ease the transition.
