When a Boston-based company began upcycling old shipping containers into indoor vertical hydroponic growing machines, the hope was that it would allow more everyday people to start growing fresh, local food in communities around the world, especially in places where the conditions are not ripe for farming. That vision is being realized in places like Montana, where a farmer is growing a wide variety of herbs and plants in her shipping container, despite the harsh, frosty climate of the state. As of December, the company has sold more than 160 shipping container farms worldwide, helping to bring more unprocessed, locally grown food to communities.
