Nearly half of Nigeria’s population have no access to electricity at all. Africa’s most populous country wants to expand electricity access to 90 percent of the population by 2030, and to do that, Nigeria is turning to renewable energy. The country aims to generate 30 percent of its total energy from renewable sources by 2030, which is a major commitment for an economy that depends heavily on fossil fuels. In particular, Nigeria is in the process of creating 10,000 solar-powered mini grids in rural areas to connect people who currently don’t have access to the national grid.
