Rice farmers are boosting their crop yields by using a revolutionary agronomical system which requires half as much water as conventional farming techniques. The owner of the idea observed that by planting fewer seeds than usual, and using organic matter as fertilizer while keeping rice plants alternately wet and dry rather than flooded, the yield increased by anywhere between 20 and 200 percent. This method could potentially help the world’s 145 million small rice farmers while reducing global warming emissions from agriculture.
