Frustrated by the increasing amount of plastic floating in the surrounding waters, two surf-loving Aussies created a buoyant rubbish bin that sucks litter and debris out of the ocean. The device is about the size of a regular rubbish bin and acts as a vacuum cleaner in the sea, being able to trap 20 kilograms of rubbish at a time. Among the most common things caught in the net are microplastics, cigarette butts, remnants of old fishnets, and other plastic contaminators. Although far from being a viable solution on a global scale, the innovative device looks like a great way of tackling the plastic problem locally.
