Food packaging is a huge waste. Thankfully, David Edwards, Harvard University Professor and edible food packaging designer, has come up with an answer that would make the plastic bag redundant. His solution, called the WikiPearl, is an edible skin that can be wrapped around food to prevent contamination and water loss. It’s washable, so any germs that might attach to the food during purchase can be washed away. However, stores aren’t ready to sell WikiPearls completely package-free, says Edwards; they’re still too dirty. So in the mean time WikiPearls are sold in biodegradable cellulose bags made from wood fiber, still a better solution than plastic.
