While some cities use congestion pricing too low emission zones — like London’s new Ultra Low Emission Zone — Iceland’s capital is taking another interesting approach as a city looking to lower emissions going forward. Reykjavík has recently approved a plan to reduce the number of petrol stations in the city from the current 75 to 37 by 2025. The Icelandic capital initially wanted to achieve this by 2030 but has now brought the target forward by five years. While not every country may be inclined to simply choose to shut down half of its largest city’s gas stations within the next five-plus years, it’s certainly one way of accelerating a national transition away from carbon-emitting vehicles.
