If you have been impressed by the recent addition of WiFi on commercial airlines, you will be even more amazed by LiFi: in-flight wireless signal transmitted not by electromagnetic waves, but light. More specifically, this signal, transmitted via LED lights, features a safer connection and less risk of interference with plane equipment.

Air France and Latécoère Group will debut the new technology on flights starting in September via the reading lights above passengers’ seats. While LiFi signal has a range of only 10 meters (versus WiFi’s 32), this new technology could revolutionize in-flight wireless connection and maybe the start of a powerful new trend that may eventually power all connectivity from our homes to our offices to the friendly skies above.
