Reducing your consumption of single-use plastics can be difficult at grocery stores, where it seems like everything comes in disposable packaging. Saving glass jars for repurposing, and buying items packaged in recyclable material is a good place to start, but cooking common kitchen ingredients from scratch is the best way to truly move towards a waste-free kitchen. 

This week, Treehugger’s Katherine Martinko has put together a list of 20 foods you can easily create from scratch. Applesauce, granola, jam, and bread are only some of the deliciously easy recipes to create from scratch. Her number one item, which surprised us how easy it could be, was tortillas – but also waffles made in advance and frozen and good old fresh yogurt.  Plus, cooking them yourself is a satisfying way to make your favorite foods even more delicious and fresh.
