Today’s Solutions: May 20, 2026

In a recent story for the Harvard Business Review, philanthropist Melinda Gates makes it clear that while great progress has been made in terms of gender equality, men still hold the upper hand across nearly every aspect of American life, from having higher wages to having a greater say in policymaking.

With that said, Gates maintains that there has never been a better opportunity than now for women to seize gender equality. Why? Because at this moment, something fundamental has begun to shift in the United States and around the world. Women are sharing their stories, marching, walking out, running for office, and winning elections in record numbers. The media is amplifying their voices and asking hard questions of the institutions that continue to lock women out.

Business leaders are under new pressure to demonstrate that their companies care about gender equality and are committed to being part of the solution. Instead of shying away from the question of gender equality, global leaders are now expected to have answers about how women and girls fit into their agendas. For the full scoop on why Gates believes that gender equality is in reach, take a look right here.
