Want a free tree for your yard or neighborhood? Well, if you live in Los Angeles, you’re in luck. Under the city’s Green New Deal, LA will give out up to seven free yard and/or street trees to qualifying residents in a bid to plant 90,000 trees in the city over the next two years.

Neighbors can get together and request free trees for their street on the City Plants website, and don’t even need to plant the trees themselves. If the city’s nonprofit partners approve a neighborhood as a place where trees can grow, they will plant them on behalf of the neighborhood. The only thing the neighbors need to do is sign an agreement to water them for at least the first five years.

LA is currently offering more than two dozen species, with information about their projected height and defining characteristics online. Considering LA’s hot temperatures, most of the available trees are drought resilient.
